TikTok Star Dominique McShain Dies at 21 After Cancer Battle
TikTok star Dominique McShain, 21, has died after battling incurable colon cancer. The New Zealand influencer shared her emotional journey with over 200,000 followers.

New Zealand-based TikTok star Dominique McShain has died at the age of 21 following a courageous and public battle with colorectal cancer. The young influencer, who garnered more than 200,000 followers through her heartfelt posts and cancer awareness videos, passed away just weeks after telling fans she had only days or weeks left to live.
McShain’s death was confirmed by People on Wednesday, although the exact date of her passing remains unknown. Her story has touched the lives of many across the globe, as she openly documented her fight against an aggressive and incurable form of colon cancer.
A Heartbreaking Farewell
On April 6, Dominique shared a deeply emotional farewell message on Instagram. In her final update, she told followers that she was entering end-of-life care and would no longer be posting updates.
"I want to be direct with you all: this will be my final updat on my cancer journey until I have passed away," she wrote. "I’ve recently been given a prognosis about five days ago of only a few days to a few weeks to live."
She revealed that her liver was rapidly failing, leading to further cancer progression that rendered her previous treatments, including chemotherapy, ineffective.
"At this point, I’ve transitioned into end-of-life care, focusing on pain relief and managing side effects, with so much time spent in both the hospital and hospice facilities," she shared.

A Life Lived Fully, Though Briefly
Despite the devastating diagnosis, McShain remained optimistic and grateful. "Although my life may be short, I genuinely feel I’ve squeezed every bit out of it," she wrote.
She credited her emotional strength and peace to her close-knit circle of family and friends, including her husband Sean Suson, who stood by her throughout her diagnosis and treatment. The couple got engaged on her 21st birthday in May 2024 and married just two months later in July.
"I won the lottery with a family that loves me unconditionally, friends who would 10000% donate a liver to me, and the sweetest husband, Sean, who’s been my rock through everything," McShain shared.
Though she acknowledged the painful reality of missing out on life’s key milestones, she expressed a sense of spiritual peace.
"The grief of what I’m missing out on is no longer overwhelming. Recently, I’ve found a sense of acceptance," she wrote. "I imagine Heaven often—a place where I’ll finally be free from the pain that’s been with me for so long."
A Voice for Awareness
Dominique McShain was not only a social media influencer but also a powerful voice for awareness and education surrounding colon cancer in young adults. Her TikTok journey began in May 2024, shortly after her diagnosis forced her to pause her studies.
"I was, until two weeks ago, a third-year psychology student," she said in her first viral video, which gained over 5.5 million views. "Basically, I stopped work and uni because I have such severe cancer, and the treatment is so intense."
McShain used her platform to candidly discuss symptoms, treatments, and the emotional toll of living with terminal cancer. Her goal, as she repeatedly stated, was to help others recognize early warning signs and to destigmatize conversations around colorectal cancer.

"I wanted to make a difference somehow and leave something behind and hopefully help people," she said. "Cancer is getting a lot more common in the colon for younger people, so I really wanted to eventually share my symptoms and raise awareness."
A Rising Global Concern
Dominique’s story sheds light on the growing crisis of colorectal cancer among younger demographics. According to the National Library of Medicine, over 1.9 million new cases of colon cancer were diagnosed globally in 2020, with more than 930,000 resulting in death. Australia, New Zealand, and Europe have some of the highest diagnosis rates.
The American Cancer Society projects over 107,000 new colon cancer cases in the U.S. alone by the end of 2025. Alarming trends show that cases among individuals under 50 have been rising by 2.4% annually between 2012 and 2021.
A Lasting Legacy
Dominique McShain’s bravery, candor, and love for life have left an indelible mark on her followers and the broader community. Her legacy will live on in the awareness she raised, the stigma she helped dismantle, and the hearts she touched.
As tributes continue to pour in across social media, McShain's final message continues to resonate: “Though it will hurt to leave you all behind, please know that I will finally be out of pain, and I will be at peace.”
She is survived by her husband Sean, her family, and the thousands who found hope, courage, and education through her story.
