Russell Brand reveals why his marriage to Katy Perry ended
Russell Brand Charged with Rape, Sexual Assault, Following Podcast Detailing Marital History.

Russell Brand, the comedian and actor, faces serious charges of rape and sexual assault, a development that has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. The Metropolitan Police have charged Brand with five sexual offenses against four women, alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2005. This news arrived just a day after Brand released a podcast in which he discussed his past marriage to Katy Perry and praised his current wife, Laura Gallacher.
The charges include the alleged rape of a woman in the Bournemouth area in 1999, oral rape and sexual assault in Westminster in 2004, indecent assault in 2001, and another sexual assault between 2004 and 2005, both also in Westminster. Brand, 49, who reportedly resides in the United States, has been charged by postal requisition and is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates' Court next month.
The timing of these charges, just a day after Brand's podcast release, has added another layer of complexity to the already intense scrutiny surrounding him. In his podcast, titled "Stay Free," Brand provided insights into his marriage to pop star Katy Perry, which lasted from 2010 to 2012. He also expressed admiration for his current wife, Laura Gallacher, with whom he shares two children.
"What I can tell you is when I was married to Katy Perry, she's like not entirely normal because she's an extraordinary massive star," Brand stated in the podcast clip, posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page. He went on to clarify that Perry was "not weird or off key and wasn't involved in anything nefarious." Brand attributed the breakdown of their marriage to "normal, human reasons marriages don't work" and emphasized his respect for her, despite their differing political views.
He contrasted his experience with Perry with his current marriage to Laura Gallacher, sister of presenter Kirsty Gallacher, expressing deep affection. Brand also used the podcast to discuss his broader views on Hollywood and culture, alleging the existence of "planned and organised dark intelligence" used for "distraction and control."
These charges stem from an investigation launched by the Metropolitan Police following allegations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse made by several women in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches in September 2023. Brand has consistently denied these accusations, asserting that all his sexual relationships were "absolutely always consensual."
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police has emphasized the ongoing support for the women who have come forward and urged anyone with further information to contact the police. The investigation remains open, and a dedicated team is available to handle any new reports.
Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed the authorization of charges against Brand, stating that the evidence was "carefully reviewed" following the police investigation. The charges include rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault.
The CPS confirmation followed the Metropolitan Police's submission of an evidence file regarding the allegations in November 2024. The case has reignited discussions about accountability and the handling of sexual assault allegations within the entertainment industry.
Brand's career has been marked by both success and controversy. He previously presented a BBC Radio 2 show and hosted Big Brother spin-off programs. His departure from BBC Radio 2 followed the "Sachsgate" incident, where he and fellow presenter Jonathan Ross left a controversial voicemail message for actor Andrew Sachs.
The upcoming court appearance on May 2nd will be a pivotal moment in this unfolding legal drama, as Brand faces the serious charges leveled against him. The case is expected to draw significant media attention and raise further questions about the culture surrounding celebrity and power.
